Notes from recent PPG meeting

  • Great News – Lotterywest has granted us funds to replace our ailing computer and printer and to refurnish the office. (Our treasurer and secretary have been busy shopping!)
  • The Red Card for Foxes Fox Grant for Marlee has now been acquitted. No foxes were caught on the Reserve as they are nearer the Waste Transfer System. Carl did treat rabbits and catch feral cats. He has also spoken to residents about dog control.
  • We are continuing with our campaign to halt the damaging proposal to build a boating channel from Dawesville to Pt Grey.

More on Point Grey dredging proposal

The document “The Ongoing Decline of the Peel-Harvey Estuary” is a sad reflection of our poor stewardship of this iconic area.

You may be moved to send your comments to one or more of the people listed in this document. If enough of us tell them it is too dangerous to approve, perhaps we will be heard.

Point Grey proposal – have your say

There is a development proposed at Point Grey, on the eastern side of the estuary from the Dawseville Cut.

Part of this proposal includes excavation and dredging to form a channel from Point Grey to the Cut.
PPG has not yet been able to fully evaluate the huge documents that form part of this proposal
but we are currently of the view that it should be delayed on the precautionary principal. Some of our concerns include:

  • The Peel Harvey Estuary is a Ramsar listed wetlands of international significance.  It is a sensitive environment and any major development could have significant impacts on the waterway which is already under threat.
  • There is a black ooze appearing along the shores of the estuary where it has never appeared before.
  • The amount of spoil that will be generated by building a Marina on 9.8 hectares of Point Grey soil at a depth of -3.5 meters AHD may cause problems in the estuary and to vegetation on the remainder of the Point Grey terrestrial development.
  • The fresh water lens on the terrestrial development may be compromised.

PPG is very concerned about the effect of this proposed development and are holding an information session -
The venue is Pt Bouvard Recreation Centre (30 Estuary Rd)
Date is Monday 11th April
Time 4.30 pm for 5pm start.
Several eminent scientists will speak at this session.

Notes from recent PPG meeting

The Mandurah Entrance Road is nearing completion. Members were disappointed about the extent of clearing for this road (especially through Marlee Reserve)and the extent of “Legacy” projects to compensate for this. It is hoped that the time will heal the scars!

Submissions & Letters

We have written alerting our newly elected Federal Minister for the Environment of our concerns about proposed developments near Lake clifton, which will place demands on the freshwater lens in the area. This in turn, places the Thrombolites at risk.

Lake Clifton has been classified as a “Threatened Ecological Community’ status (see http://www.environment.gov.au/epbc) and click on “Lake Clifton”. PPG also wrote a submission in agreement of this classification, which will give the area greater protection.

Dawesville to Binningup Coastline – The EPA has undertaken a review to clarify the environmental values of the region and the state of current knowledge and scientific data about these values. This information (Bulletin Report No. 1359)has identified additional areas of conservation significance (for example areas adjacent to the Peel-Yalgorup National Park), and areas that may have potential for development and land use that are compatible with the environmental values.

Work is continuing on a Grant Application to have a bird hide built at Lake McLarty. We hope to obtain funding for a ground level bird hide with wheelchair access and a raised viewing platform. This option was chosen so that the hide would be built on the sand ridge near the water tank rather than nearer to the lake where Acid Suplhate Soil may be present.
